It's Wedding Season! How to Have Your Cake (And Stay Slim, Too)!

Tomorrow is June 1, which means the official start to "wedding month." You probably have at least one wedding to attend or participate in this month, and maybe one every week.
How are you suppose to handle the endless buffets, cakes, and bridesmaids' luncheons while still staying in swimsuit shape? Here are my tips on how you can......have your (wedding) cake and stay slim too!

Don't skip meals.

The biggest mistake I see most people make when attending a wedding is "saving up" calories for the event by skipping meals or eating very little leading up to the wedding. This backfires because they end up overeating at the actual event. If you do want to "save up" a few calories, my suggestion is skipping any treats you may normally have that day and the day after (piece of chocolate, ice cream, bag of chips, etc) and going calorie-free for all your drinks (so skipping any specialty coffee drinks or juices). This will allow you some wiggle room for enjoying indulgent foods at the wedding without leaving you starving when you arrive. The day of and the day after, have your normal, balanced meals including a whole grain, a lean protein, and one or more fruits and veggies at each meal.

Have a strategic snack before you go.

Having a small snack (100-200 calories) that includes some protein and some complex carbohydrate (i.e. small apple with piece of string cheese, handful of baby carrots with 2 tbsp. hummus, or half a banana with 10 almonds) will help to keep blood sugar levels in check and ward off cravings, helping you to make smarter choices at the wedding since you won't be ravenous and have low blood sugar when you arrive.

Swap out the sparkling.

If the wedding reception includes champagne or punch, alternate between glasses of that and water to stay hydrated and keep your total calories in check for the evening. To stay festive, chose sparkling water.

Choose your favorites.

If you are faced with a buffet at the reception, chose your favorite item from each food group rather than trying to eat a little of everything. So that might mean choosing the chicken or the fish, the bread or the rice, the bride's cake or the groom's cake, rather than taking both. The exception are fresh fruits and veggies-- you can double up on those if you like.

Step away from the food.

Rather than congregate with friends around a food table, encourage everyone to get a plate and grab a spot away from the food. This will make it easier to avoid mindless seconds. Then don't forget to head for the dance floor when you are done! You'll make memories with your friends and burn calories!

Let the weddings begin!
