I adore a beautiful tiered white wedding cake, but I also love cool, surprising twists on this iconic dessert. The first one I distinctly remember came from a Town & Country magazine story 15 years ago. It was an elegant cupcake tower with a forest theme served at a Napa Valley wedding reception held under a giant oak tree. Since then, I've seen other interesting untraditional wedding cakes at friends' celebrations. Here are 5 of my favorites:

1. Macarons:
What's not to love about these delicate French cookies? I was blown
away by this gorgeous conical confection at my friends' wedding. I'd
seen similar displays in Parisian pastry shops, but it looks even
prettier at a wedding.
2. Dark, Dark Chocolate:
A friend of mine hired a Swiss chocolate master to create a five-tiered
square wedding cake. The chocolate shell was a deep, dark brown and the
ivory white chocolate accents echoed the designs on her gown. Very
graphic, dramatic, and delicious.

3. Doughnuts:
The bride
opted for a classic white cake, but the groom insisted on doughnuts.
Their caterer arranged a wide variety of flavors into a tall pyramid.
They tasted great with coffee and kept the formal wedding fun.
4. Bread Pudding:
My college roommate has always loved bread pudding, so she chose it for
her wedding reception. Small classic white ramekins were artfully
stacked and the bride and groom cut into a big one for photos.

5. Cookies:
A Pittsburg pal had a huge cookie table at her wedding. Guests brought
homemade favorites and the result was a lovely long table piled with
platters of American favorites. It was such a great celebration of
family and friends.
