Wedding cake trends come and go, but there always seems to be a place
for some type of flowers in the top ten lists and many wedding
receptions every year. Sometimes the flower types change or the color
scheme come and go but brides everywhere appreciate the impact a well
placed bloom has on the guests and to enhance the tone of the event.
Choosing different flowers for the cake can convey elegance (lilies,
iris, white roses), romance (tulips, red roses, sweet peas) or casual
fun (daisies, lilacs, chrysanthemum, daffodil). You can use fresh
flowers from a reputable organic grower, grow your own choices or create
lovely gum paste flowers specifically for you and your special day.
Some beautiful flowered wedding cakes for spring, or anytime, could
include:
A Cascade of Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas make every wedding cake trend list
every year because they are utterly charming and look fabulous
cascading down the cake or as a single intricate bloom. They should be
gum paste in a best case scenerio because these profuse blooms are toxic
when fresh. If you must use fresh, try to place them on parchment or
waxed paper on the cake instead of pressing them into the icing. You can
also find very realistic silk hydrangeas in many craft stores, so
consider that option as well. These flowers have a lovely range of
colors for any theme.
Tilted Tulips
Tulips are a happy flower and are used almost exclusively on
spring wedding cakes because they are usually found in the spring
surrounded by daffodils and other bulb blooms. Tulips look both happy
and elegant with their pretty colors and streamlined shape. They also
droop so gracefully it is possible to imagine a slim stylish woman
instead of a flower. Tulips are poisonous so it is best to use silk or
gum paste products on your cake. Combining this sophisticated looking
flower with a topsy turvy cake or unusual design can create an
interesting juxtaposition in theme.
Fantasy Black and White
Flowers don't have to be real looking to have impact and
class. Black and white wedding cake designs often utilize black blooms
for impact and to create a severely chic looking design. Piped black vines
or leaves added to these dark blossoms create an almost fabric like
look on a stark white fondant background. Don't be afraid top use colors
for your flowers that do not appear in nature.
Gradually Shrinking Camillias
One very large impact flower or a large flower surrounded by
blooms in the same color shades can look absolutely unique on a cake.
This design can create an almost ruffled look depending on the flowers
used. Camillias, peonies, carnations and roses
all have a great deal of texture for this look. Camillias are on the
toxic list so try gum paste and silk on you cake to ensure food safety.
Dark blooms on a lighter cake also help add to the ruffled effect.
Real Versus Fake Flowers
The cakes described in this article for the most part recommend using
fake flowers because the real ones are toxic. Always be aware of what
you are placing on a cake and never put ingredients or decorations on
the cake that are not safe to consume.
