2016 wedding cake trends are taking cake design and the
self-expression of couples to new levels which is made possible by the
advances in cake design tools and available ingredient resources.
Nothing is beyond reach when it comes to ideas and visions of the
perfect wedding cake, so dust off your gum paste tools and practice your
piping skills for the new year!
- Experience Cakes: These creations tell the tale of the couple in pictures, decorations, or actual writing. There is nothing more personal than a cake that reflects passions, hobbies, experiences, and even quirks of the couple. One interesting trend is creating a blank backdrop, either in white fondant or pure black fondant and enlisting close family and friends to write on sections (carefully!) in edible marker. These little blurbs recount unique observations or well wishes for the couple. These very personal cakes often eliminate the need for a groom’s cake because the main cake encompasses both bride and groom.
- Printed Cakes and Edible Paper: Cakes in previous years often has pictures on them, but these illustrations were painstakingly piped on with icing. Now, edible paper and edible ink put through actual printers can create vivid real pictures to adorn a wedding cake. These can be pictures of the couple, part of the wedding theme, or just designs to enhance the overall look of the cake. Just make sure the printer used is a dedicated machine so that you don’t end up with inedible ink traces on your cake.
- Desserts instead of Cakes: People seem to have less and less disposable income to put towards events, even those as important as weddings. This means either using a fake wedding cake, decorated Styrofoam to take the place of more expensive edible versions, or having dessert stand ins for the traditional cake. There are no rules that state you can’t serve a pretty cheesecake decorated in theme colors or design elements. You then can have your cake (or dessert) and eat it too without spending too much money.
- Huge Multi-Tier Cakes: As it often goes with trends, there is a counterpoint like huge elaborate cakes instead of simple pared down versions. Many couples are throwing caution to the wind and going big. Celebrities in 2015 created chandelier cakes, cakes in the shape of the bride, and cakes that towered above the guests in glorious excess. If you are having a large wedding, are known for your outgoing personality, and can afford it; why not have a cake that fills the cake table?
- Filling the Cake Table: Along with huge multi-tier cakes, wedding trend in 2016 also show a traditional dessert table with many types of cakes instead of one. This trend means you can suit every need and desire while presenting whatever theme you want at the same time. Perhaps your wedding is meant to reflect an English garden with pastel colors and lots of lovely flowers. Each cake on your table can be topped with different flowers or frosted in different complimentary colors.
