Thanks Kids Baking Championship for the delicious inspiration!
Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: Vegetarian, Nut-Free
Serves: 6
Ingredients
- 1 bowl of chocolate cake batter made from a standard (17 oz) store-bought package of cake mix (made according to package directions)
- 1 (7 oz) can of light, real dairy whipped cream
- 1 (21 oz) jar of sour cherries (see note)
- Chocolate sauce, for drizzling
Directions
Allow the waffles to cool completely for about 5-10 miutes. It's super important that you let the waffles cool, so that the whipped cream won't melt when you stack your cake.
Once waffles are cool, put one waffle on a plate. Spray whipped cream around the outer edges of the waffle. Fill the the inside of the waffle with a 3-4 tablespoons of cherries. Top with another waffle.
Repeat step 3 with the remaining layers, including the top layer. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the top and around the plate. Enjoy!

Notes
Traditionally,
black forest cake is made with sour cherries, but they can be hard to
find. Feel free to replace the jar of sour cherries with a 21 oz can of
cherry pie filling instead. It's just as good!
You may need to tweak the ingredient amounts a little bit depending on what kind of waffle maker you're using and the size of your waffles.
Tip: If you're using a similar waffle maker to mine (makes 4 square waffles at one time), you should have enough batter to make 8 waffles. I like to make all 8 waffles and then choose the 6 prettiest ones for my cake... and eat the other 2!
